march has been a bit of an up and down sort of month so far, some aspects of my life are coming together well, and others less so. i’ve now watched 70 (and a half) films so far this year, which if you’re keeping count like i am, means im about four and a half films behind where i should be, but i’m not too fussed. no doubt between uni, and working casually, there's going to be plenty of days where i have time to watch two (or three, or five) films in a day. happy to take suggestions and recommendations, and you’re always welcome to slag off my choices on letterboxd (lewisfishr).
i’ve picked up a bit more leisure reading, rather than the mountain of australian literature that i’ve found myself reading so far this year. today i got up to book 60, which is a little on average ahead of schedule for the year, but some of the books in my defence have been quite on the short side. prior to this year i’d never really dnf’ed a book, simply putting it aside until i was ready to come back for it. while this is good for books you own, sometimes you get the feeling that you won’t ever come back to it. if we include my dnf’s, i’ve interacted with 74 books this year, which isn’t bad. there’s been no out and out standouts so far, but again, it is only march. going back to mark lawrence was a joy, especially since i’d been putting off reading the book of the ice since 2020, and it’s got me wanting to do a reread of all his other stuff. i’ve avoided rereading anything so far, and no doubt will get around to it doing the kingkiller chronicle again (looking at you elle moran for my copy of the name of the wind!), but it’s been nice holding off for a while.
some other small joys getting me through the year so far are strange and silly b-movies, the musical works of penguin cafe orchestra and morgan harper-jones, catching up with friends and family, and just trying to do things more for myself than for anyone else. i’ll see you next time, promise you i’ll be more frequent, even if it’s just for brendan.
